Feeling Better but Reflux???

I’m finally feeling as though I’m returning to a normal woman rather than a postnatal one!  Since my d & c on Friday my bleeding seems to have improved so much so that makes me well happy!  i mean, no one is happy after 9 weeks plus bleeding are they!

Everything is going well I think at the mo, the Health Visitor has been out today because of my op (I should go to the clinic now) and she weighed oliver who is now 13lb 5.5oz!!  WOW!  He’s been struggling keeping his feeds down lately and when he has brought it up there has been loads and he has still been hungry after his 6 oz feed so I took him to the doctors who his treating him for Reflux (I’m not convinced) and gave him some Gaviscon Infant which has done the trick but I think it’s making my lil man constipated!  So for his next feed I’m going to just try him with gripe water and hope that does the trick.  He’s puttin gon weight really well though so I’m not concerned in that respect!

We had pancakes tonight… mmmm!!! I made them too…  Yup, first time I’ve ever made pancakes as my mum usually makes them but I invited her here instead… I thought that seeing as though I’m now a mummy I should defo learn to cook pancakes… haha!!

Ally and Laura are coming to visit Thurs which will be lovelyas Laura hasnt met Oliver yet. Other than that I have a pretty quiet week this week. I have to go to town one day as its Matts Birthday next tues and Valentines day wednesday so need to get sorted for that!  Think I may have a trip with my mum tomorrow!

Ooo…   more baby news…  Oliver slept from 8pm till 5.15am last night…  isn’t he just a clever boy!   He is laughing and smiling so much now too which is just adorable and he is really cooing which makes me laugh so much.. It’s amazing how such a little person can entertain u so much, I literally just sit watching him for hours and sit pulling faces and making silly noises tgo him!  Being a mummy is THE best feeling in the world!  Evan at silly o’clock in the morning cos my lil boy still manages a big beaming smile for me and his Daddy!

Awww…..  XXX

Hiya, Sorry stumbled on your blog through Laura’s. My little boy suffered from reflux when he was a baby, docs put him on gaviscon and it took a while to kick in. Its one of those things that builds up gradually. he went from throwing everything up after EVERY feed, to only throwing up once or twice a day in a week or so, but gradually it went down to hardly ever.. He’s now 20 months old and hasnt suffered from it for months. If you want to chat about it then give me a shout. Ally and Laura have my contact details.

It sounds as though its quite common then? I had loads of problems with my tummy when i was a baby, and the doctor told mum to bottle feed me flat coke… not that id recommend that without dr advice!

lol… not sure how good that would be when he’s teething! Ally can u text or email me Nemmas Email address?

Thanks for that Nemma. Its very reasurring to have advice from a fellow mummy!!! My worry is that I’ll keep him on the Gaviscon when he doesn’t need it cos the doctor didn’t give me any advice as to how long to leave him on it and when I rang about making another appointment they said I didn’t need one and could have a repeat prescription. How do you know when the reflux is better? Is it just a case of weaning him off it? Like drpping it from a couple of feeds a day? Thanks again for the advice XxX

Luke was on gaviscon for almost 8 months. It sounds scary for him to be on medication for that long, but it doesnt affect his body in any way whatsover other than coating his tummy. Basically its the fact that his body doesnt absorb it that helps it work.
Reflux is basically caused by the babys stomach valve not being able to close properly at first, Its basically like the acid indigestion you had while you were pregnant. BUT dont panic, it does get better with age and by the time he’s sitting up (Which sounds like a long way off now, but will be here quicker than you think lol) It should be a lot better. Once they are weaned onto solid food it gets better too as the food is heavier. I wouldnt be in too much of a hurry to wean him off it to be honest, as sometimes they can suffer from silent reflux, which is basically like really bad heartburn, and they dont always throw up. The gaviscon will start to work soon enough and as I say you could do with keeping his doses regular.
There are other things you can do to help,
Dont sit him up too quickly after a feed, give the milk a decent enough time to settle in his tummy after he’s been fed. I used to sit for half an hour with Luke after he had been fed sometimes! (Any excuse for an extra long cuddle! lol)
Try a bottle thats designed to help reduce colic such as the doctor brown bottles. (We didnt find out about these until Luke was older but apparently they are really good!) The only problem with these is that they are quite expensive, but as one mum pointed out, what you save in repeat feeding after they have thrown up, you spend in bottles.
Try tilting the top end of the cot upa little bit. Either some books or something to raise it a little bit. Im not talking about a 45 degree angle, but obviously anything that will help gravity a little bit. You can but special wedge cushions to fit under matresses too.
My email address is ederner at gmail dot com
If you need a chat about anything or are having a rough day then give me a shout. I’m normally around, Im out his morning at a surestart group (By the way, you should take him to some of these if you have any in your area. Perfect excuse to get out the house and you make some good friends up there! There’s a chance to talk to Mum and realise your not the only one who cant remember the last time she wasnt covered in baby goo of some sort lol)
Also try googling reflux, theres loads of parenting sites out there too that have lots of other Mums who have been, or are going through the same thing. The askamum sites quite good and the forums are really freindly.
Last but not lest, if your worried about anything then give the doctors a ring! If they wont answer your questions to your satisfaction then get them to find you someone who will!
Hope little Oliver is doing well, if he’s gaining weight by the rate he is he sounds like your doing a brilliant job!
    Hope the advice helps,
    Em
